Eating Salmon Is Bad For Your Health

salmonSalmon is supposed to be “good for you”, right?

It’s one of those foods you look at and say, “I’m going to eat healthy, I think I’ll have the salmon.”

You’ve heard they’re a great source of protein and essential fatty acids.

That’s true. In fact, I eat salmon several times per week…but I may stop eating it soon…

And trust me, what you’re about to read is very disturbing.

Before you know it you might be eating a genetically modified fish that looks like salmon, tastes like salmon, smells like salmon…but is it really salmon?

I know I won’t be eating it, that’s for sure! And if you care about your body and would like to know what certain companies are trying to do to our food supply (at the expense of your health) to make a quick buck…then be sure to read this entire post.

So rumor has it that a company (who shall remain nameless for various reasons) has been working on a way to create genetically modified salmon that grows twice as fast as conventional wild salmon.  And a so-called “advisory committee” recently told the Food and Drug Administration that this fish appears to be safe.  Yet many have argued that more testing needs to be done before it is served on your dinner table. Myself included.

If the FDA approves this it will be the first time the government has allowed modified animals to be marketed for human consumption. The company that has created this salmon states that their product is safe and environmentally sustainable. (But I’ll let you come to your own conclusion on that one)

Those in disagreement with this state that it may lead to the decimation of the wild salmon population and I agree. They are also concerned that these modified eggs and salmon will make it into the natural habitats and breed with the wild salmon.  This will completely change the makeup of the salmon and maybe make the endangered population even more endangered because of the rate at which these modified fish eat and the quantities.

Not too mention that this has been untested in regards to long term health of the fish and to humans.

This may not sound like a big deal, but if you read my stuff regularly you should know that one of my rules for optimal health is that the food you eat should be natural, fresh, whole, and pure. In my opinion, nature did not intend for humans to eat genetically enhanced animal proteins, and when you screw with nature the consequences can often be deadly. But of course we are all free to make our own choices as to what we put into our bodies.

From what I’ve read, this company has been able to create this super enhanced type of salmon by adding a growth hormone from a chinook salmon that allows the fish to produce growth hormone all year long…conventional salmon only produce this hormone some of the time.  The engineers also added another gene from an eel like fish called an ocean pout that acts like a switch and helps to keep the hormone turned on.

Pretty cool science, but definitely not something I would eat. Last time I checked…eating an animal from a science project was never cool!

Anyways, the FDA made a statement and said that there were no biologically relevant differences between the engineered salmon and conventional salmon.  Critics, however, still have two main concerns…which are the safety of human consumption and the effect this will have on the environment. Both of which are critical issues.

If approved this may be on the market in 2 years and at that time you may not even know you are eating a genetically modified salmon because there are lobbying efforts to not have the fish labeled as genetically engineered.

I love salmon but if this measure ends up going through I may give up eating the fish all together…we will see. I mean, I just don’t want to pollute my body with genetically modified Omega 3’s.

I guess we will just have to wait and see what happens but I’ll keep you posted. If you have any thoughts, opinions, want to rant, etc just leave a comment below.

PS – I like to use pure Antarctic Krill Oil because it contains over 47 times the antioxidant power of fish oil and lutein and provides a supercharged combination of antioxidants, omega 3 oils and other powerful nutrients. A pretty good backup I’d say in case eating fish becomes a threat to your health.

It is really important to know and watch what you eat I prefer to buy fresh fish than those ones that are already packaged in the supermarket in this way I could be sure that the fish I’m buying is a good catch or not, I agree with you krill oil is way better than fish oil 50 times much better to be specific LOL!! Krill oil is made from those shrimp like creatures which are commonly eaten by whales and seals, I can’t help but to agree with you consuming krill oil sure do have a lot of benefits.
